Carnival in Kastela

The winter in Kastela is mild comparing to the continental Croatia, right now in mid January the temperatures during the day are between 7 an 15 degrees Celsius, and most days are sunny and dry.

This is perfect weather for a weekend getaway, and no better a time to spend a weekend or a few days in Kastela than the time of carnival.

Carnival is the festive season that occurs before Lent, culminating the day before Ash Wednesday. Carnival is celebrated with street parades and dances, people usually dress up and masquerade. Most famous of the carnivals are for sure: the carnival in Brazil, in Venice and the Mardi Gras in New Orleans.

The history of carnival in Kastela reaches back as far as 1895 when the first carnival festivity was organized. One of the characteristics of carnival in Kastela is the tradition of burning the so called «Krnje», this is a culprit to blame for all the hardships, troubles and pressures of the previous year. A statue of the culprit is built, the jury of the people reads the verdict to him and in the end he is set on fire and let burn down. This was a manner of parting with the troubles of the past, and starting the new year fresh.

In the seven Kastelas there are three organized carnivals: one in Kastel Sucurac, one in Kastel Kambelovac and the oldest one in «Donja Kastela» starting from Kastel Stafilic, passing trough Kastel Novi and culminating in Kastel Stari with the burning of the «Krnje». There are also Kids' carnivals and many organized masqueraded dances during the period from mid January to the end of the carnival period.

The carnival association of Donja kastela «Poklade» has been founded in 1913, and since 1999 it has been a member of the International association of the carnival associations FECC. Since 1989 they have been publishing «Maskadur». Maskadur is a magazine that collects the short stories, comics and anecdotes from the life of the town and the local people.

The main event is the «Krnjeval», always held on the «Pokladni Tuesday» this year to be held on February 24.

Other famous carnivals in Croatia are the carnival in Rijeka, in Samobor, and the carnivals on the islands Korcula and Lastovo.

Medjugorje

On the south east part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, near the town of Citluk it’s situated one of the most known sanctuary in the world-Medugorje. The parish of Meðugorje is composed by the villages Medugorje, Bijakovici, Vionica, Miletina and Sumarci and it was established in 1892.
Medugorje owns its popularity to the appereance of the Virgin Mary, who started to appear to a local group of kids the 24 June 1981. The kids were scared at first and run away, but the curiosity of the kids was stronger than the fear and the next day, on the same hour, they went to the place of the appereance where the Virgin show herself again and invited them to pray with her. That day, the 25 June, is celebrated as an anniversary of the Peace Quenn as the Virgin Mary introduced herself to the kids that day. The appereances were frequent in the beginning, and with every new appereance, as the witnesses said, she brought messages of peace, love and faith. For their testifing the witnesses and their families and relatives, along with few local priests, were prosecuted. The kids were brought in the police station on hearings and submitted on psicological exams, but it was found that they were perfectly healthy and that there were no evidence that they had lied about what happened in Medugorje. As time passed by the appereances were decreasing, the kids had grown up, but to some of them the Virgin Mary apperas even today from time to time.
Medugorje is visited by milion of pilgrims every year who come here from all around the world to find their inner peace, the consolation and the strenght to cope with their daily problems trought praying and fasting.
